Current status of the UK ID card scheme
The newly elected government are now committed to scrapping the ID card scheme. However, at present any identity cards that have been issued remain valid. Details of how the NIR will be scrapped have not yet been announced. Announcement from the Identity and Passport Service
ID cards are now compulsory for certain foreign nationals and 'voluntary' for UK citizens living in Greater Manchester.
Citizens in Greater Manchester are able to apply for an ID card. Once they have received their card they are then on the National Identity Register for life and are compelled by law to always possess a valid ID card and to keep their record up to date. There is no provision for these 'volunteers' to remove themselves from the scheme once they are part of it.
ID cards are also 'voluntary' for 16-24 year olds in London as of 8 February 2010. The government is marketing the 'Proof of age' aspects of the card. This is despite the existence of several government approved proof of age cards which are cheaper than the National ID card, do not require fingerprints, and do not require a lifetime lock-in to the National Identity Register.
NO2ID supporters in the Manchester area are reporting that the government is currently sending mail to every household informing them of the benefits, but not the risks, of the ID card scheme.
